Early Years:
Although Slash was born in London, he was raised in Staffordshire, England. His mother was a black American and his father was a white Englishman. Both parents were quite artistic and worked in entertainment. Slash's mother designed clothes for entertainers, she even designed some costumes for a guy called David Bowie, a famous rock artist who was also an actor and producer. Slash's father on the other hand, provides art direction for record albums, a notable client would be none other than Neil Young. When he was 11 years old, Slash moved to L.A with his mother, his father stayed in England, but his father eventually moved into L.A. In the mid 70's, Slash's parents divorced each other and went there separate ways. Slash moved into his Grandmothers house. This is the time when he discovered BMX. Slash joined up the a group of other biking kids and eventually became a professional BMX rider, winning many awards plus cash for his fantastic riding.
The Guitar that changed EVERYTHING:
At the age of 15, Slash's grandmother gave Slash his first guitar. The thing that made the guitar special was not only that it was Slash's first guitar, but that it only had one string... Although it had this one disadvantage Slash was able to learn how to play. Soon enough, the bike was put in the corner and Slash became obsessed with the guitar, playing at least 12 hours a day! It became a problem when school work started to suffer because Slash was skipping classes, instead sitting in some corner and playing the guitar the whole day. Sure, school may have suffered but Slash's social life became much better. Other kids began thinking he was cool and started hanging around him. He began joining more bands than you can poke a stick at, jamming with other young musicians. Eventually Slash dropped out of school altogether in grade 11. Slash now sought a proper band. He soon met Steven Adler, the drummer, who introduced Slash to Axl Rose, the singer. Slash then put an ad in the paper, this is how he got his bass guitarist, Duff McKagen. This group then formed the band that is now known as Guns 'n' Roses!
Slash's Snakepit and Slash's Blue Ball:
So what about Slash's other bands? Well the way Slash's Snakepit came to be was like this. Slash got tired of Guns 'n' Roses slow pace of offering up albums and decided to make his own band. So, he contacted Matt Sorum, Gilby Clarke, Mike Inez, and Eric Dover. They than recorded an album, IT'S FIVE O'CLOCK SOMEWHERE. The album went platinum worldwide and Slash promised that Snakepit would be back. In the Summer of 1996, Slash was invited to play in a Blues concert in Budapest, Hungary. Slash obviously liked the experience and decided to make his on Blues band, Slash's Blue Ball. The band is yet to record an album, but when Axl Rose and Slash had a dispute over where Guns 'n' Roses was heading, Slash got busy with Blue Ball and started playing some gigs all over California's clubs. They only played covers so the could play straight away.
So that's Slash in a bombshell, the rest is history!
